William Gater - "Shintoism and the Yasukuni Question"

  • ICJC Lecture Hall 249-2 Yamate-cho Naka-ku, Yokohama Japan (map)

With over 40 years of various experiences living, teaching and researching in Japan, Mr. William Gater will present an intriguing lecture for fifth evening in the 2013-2014 Friday Night Lecture Series. Mr. Gater holds a Ph. D. from the University of Montreal with a specialization in Linguistics (historical, phonological and dialectology). Among many posts held here in Japan, he served as Foreign Lecturer at the University of Tokyo from 1979-2004.

Mr. Gater's lecture will examine "Shintoism and the Yasukuni Question", a topic that is regularly discussed in the news particularly in the foreign press, concerning the religious and political events connected with it.  Mr. Gater will provide a neutral explanation of the problem - its background - and why it is still a rallying point for nationalism and for misunderstandings, both in Japan and abroad.
