The International Center for Japanese Culture is located in the heart of the historic foreign residential section of Yokohama, high on a bluff opposite Minato No Mieru-oka Koen (Harborview Park) overlooking the bustle of Japan’s second largest port city. Some of Yokohama’s most popular neighborhoods for foreign residents are within walking distance or a short car ride, and there is convenient access to public bus, subway and train service. The Motomachi Chukagai Station of the Minato Mirai Line, a 5-minute walk from the center, connects with Shibuya in the heart of Tokyo in just 35 minutes via Limited Express. Getting to ICJC
Japan is known for its excellent public transportation system. Two major train/subway lines provide reliable and convenient access to YIS from all areas of Yokohama and elsewhere in Kanagawa Prefecture and Tokyo. The ICJC is accessible from Motomachi Chukagai Station on the Minato Mirai Subway Line (which runs as the Tokyu Toyoko Line to the north of Yokohama Station) and from Yamate , Sakuragicho and Ishikawacho stations on the JR Negishi Line (which runs as the Keihin Tohoku Line to the north of Yokohama Station). In addition to the walking and bus directions provided below, taxi service is available at all these stations. If the taxi driver is unfamiliar with the ICJC location, you can point out that it is near the gym of YIS (Yokohama International School). You can provide the address: 249-2 Yamate-cho, Naka-ku or telephone number: 045.263.8009 for GPS use.
From Motomachi Chukagai Station on the Minatomirai Line – a 5-minute walk
Motomachi Chukagai Station, a 5-minute walk from ICJC, is just 35 minutes from Shibuya in the heart of Tokyo by Limited Express. From Shibuya, take the Tokyu-Toyoko Line, which becomes the Minatomirai Line after Yokohama Station. There is no need to change trains. Motomachi Chukagai is the last station on the line. Try to ride toward the front of the train, as you will need to exit via a long series of escalators all the way to the front at the Motomachi end of the platform. The most direct route to ICJC is via Exit 6. Upon exiting the street-level ticket wickets at the Motomachi end of the station, follow the signs for Exit 6 and take either the escalators or an elevator up to a park called Americayama Park. From there, it is a quick three minute walk through the park and along the edge of the Foreign Cemetery to the Bluff Road across the street from the YIS Modern Languages Building. After you cross the street, walk right towards the first corner and walk down that street. The ICJC is 100 m down on the right hand side of the street. You will see the YIS gym building and the ICJC just next to it.
From Yamate Station on the JR Negishi Line – an 8-minute bus ride (Bus No. 20)
There is only one exit at Yamate Station. Turn left around the corner after exiting the ticket gate, and you will see the bus stop. Bus No. 20 stops at the front end of the bus stop. (Do not take the No. 222 bus.) Buses depart every 10 or 15 minutes. The bus ride takes approximately 8 minutes to the Minato no Mieru Oka Koen-mae bus stop, which is located just a few meters from the front entrance of Yokohama International School. Facing the school, walk to the right and take the first street down on your left. The ICJC is about 100m further on the right hand side, next to the YIS gym.
From Sakuragicho Station on the JR Negishi Line – a 12- to 15-minute bus ride (Bus No. 11)
Bus No. 11 bus departs from the East side of Sakuragicho Station. There are many bus stops at the station, so make sure you get the right one. You want Bus Stop No. 1. Bus No. 26 also leaves from this stop, so make sure you’re on Bus No. 11, bound for Hodogaya Station or Maita Station. Bus No. 11 departs every 10 or 15 minutes. The ride to the Minato no Mieru Oka Koen-mae bus stop takes about 12 to 15 minutes. From the bus stop, it is a short walk to the ICJC (see above for directions).
From Ishikawacho Station on the JR Negishi Line – a 15-minute walk
Ishikawacho Station is the closest JR train station to the school and many students and visitors choose to make the pleasant 15-minute walk through the Motomachi shopping area to the school from here. Exit the South Exit at Ishikawacho Station, turn right out of the station by the taxi stand and walk about 150 meters to a large intersection. Cross over and walk straight along the Motomachi Shopping Street for about 10 minutes. At the end of the shopping street, you will see a large Gap store on the right and a Starbucks ahead to the left. If you don’t mind climbing stairs, turn right at the Gap, and walk up and to the left past a parking garage and up the steps that run along the left side of the Foreign Cemetery. (Alternatively, you can go straight at the Gap for about 50 meters to the Motomachi Chukagai station and take the elevator/escalator up to Americayama Park. See above for directions.) When you reach the top of the steps, catch your breath, then turn right and follow the small road alongside the cemetery for about 100 meters to the main road. From there you will see the YIS Modern Languages building across the street to the left. To get to the ICJC entrance, cross over and walk…….
